Authorize.net goes down

Authnet suffered an outage this morning. Current rumors suggest that it was due to a fire at a data-center, which subsequently destroyed the backup generators from the sprinklers.
Authorize.net is currently the largest payment gateway in the world. This is affecting millions of websites right now. To my knowledge this is the first major outage since the DDOS attack they suffered several years ago.
A casualty of this magnitude has the ability to permanently damage / destroy this company’s trust and reputation.
What happened to redundancy? You would think that a company as big as Authorize.net would have some sort of data backup / failover system so this could not happen..
No fail safe system,(redundancy), how did they manage to over look something so vital to their operation.
Just cause your the biggest doesn’t mean your the most competent, just means you have the most corporate dollars backing you.
Wow.. toppled down by just a DDOS.. Need to tighten that security screw it’s been loose for a long time.
Who are the top 5 gateways in terms of number of transactions annually in your view?
I am sure they can handle the problem. If not, they sure will loose all the trust from its customer. They are dead.
This was a surprise to many people that this actually happened. A lot of customers were affected and REALLY mad.
They have to handle these situations very carefully.

AuthorizeNet’s back up data center was very close to being completed when the fire happened. It’s online now so hopefully there won’t be a complete credit card processing outage again with AuthorizeNet. Nice to see even though thier main site was down they were still able to update clients via twitter.
I think there is no need to woory about it. Authorized.Net’s data recovery system works well.
